"The Reading Zone" is a manifesto, and like all good manifestos it identifies a big problem and aims to fix it. The problem is the drop off in pleasure reading that occurs somewhere between elementary school and high school. Parents who faithfully read to their children and forked over advance purchase money for every Harry Potter sequel suddenly discover that those same children, now adolescents, disdain reading. Librarians design enticing book displays and keep up with the young adult booklists, teachers toss "The Scarlet Letter" in favor of more enticing fare ---but they sense they're on the losing side. What is the culprit? TV? Computers? A shortened attention span? It certainly isn't a dearth of good and appealing books for students in middle and high school. Nancie Atwell, the author of "The Reading Zone" and a well known educator, blames the schools, and to some extent she is right, although big problems usually have more than one source. Atwell indicts the schools for failing to foster simple reading for pleasure, and her book offers a number of sensible and interesting ways to set that right. She also conveys, far better than anyone else I've read on the subject, the joy to be had when a book transports a child or young adult out of his or her life and into the lives of others. "The Reading Zone" should be mandatory reading for language arts and English teachers. (It's not very long and it's relatively inexpensive, thus easy to pass around a department.) Atwell's jeremiad on the subject of how high school English teachers kill the pleasure kids might take in books is designed to make said teachers (I include myself) squirm. To some extent she is right, but she does not consider the intense pressures on high school kids whose leisure time is splintered by jobs, sports, SAT prep, and any other number of things. For a teenager, it can be hard simply to find time to read. If you're a teacher, you may not be able to institute her concept of a Reading Workshop, but you can take away many valuable ideas from this little book. The reading lists she has posted on her school's web site (mentioned in the book) are worth the price all by themselves.

I just loved it!! I have a 7th Gr who is not much of a reader. He complains that he can't find a good book that he likes. Although there are many other characters in some of the chapters, Billy Jo decribes them as if they were describing themselves. For instance, Mad Dg is Billy Jo's only friend, he is always tring to help Billy and her pa to get money. She hated how he made her go into compentitions to win money, but she still loved him. Billy Jo discovers that she can't always think about that past, and focous on the future. Also She can no longer have some one else always taking care of her, so she learns to take care of herself. Billy Jo is one of the best, most outstanding character I have ever read about.I would recommend this book to any girl ages 8-12 and love historical fiction because they will love just like me. I think it should be a classic.

Before you start flying a model airplane you must make yourself aware of the local laws. You will also require a proper flying field, especially for RC airplanes. Once the plane starts to head down the runway, you will see that it is trying to pull a little to the left side. In order to correct it, move the rudder to the right. With the airplane getting light on wheels, the elevator stick should be pulled back with the noise rising. The wings must be kept at a level and fly the model plane at approximately 20 to 25 degree angle to the ground. Ease of the elevator stick in case the model starts climbing at steep of an angle. The plane must be turned around, when at 125 feet.

Land with the nose into the wind so that, the airspeed of the plane is high while the ground speed is less. When the plane is in front of you and at far side of the runway, pull back the throttle to half and pull the elevator stick back for slowing down the model. Just before the model touches the ground, gradually flare up the nose and let it glide down gently. This will prevent excess speed that might result in the airplane bouncing back into the air. Landing is very important when flying model airplanes. With practice you will be able to fly your airplane without any hesitation and difficulty.

Taking a preventative method like this will save you from having to clean up after them, and it teaches them responsibility.

Showing them how important it is to keep the house clean and take pride in what you have is very important. I'm all in favor of being good stewards of our earth, but this kind of unsupported (and unsupportable) attack on the vast volume of evidence that isn't in lock-step with the agenda of the global warming theorists is pure propaganda. A scientifically legitimate book would consider both sides of the argument.
Customer Review: AGW Indoctrination for (Children of ) Dummies
Apparently, freedom of speech also means freedom to wantonly propagandize children. The chart is only one of many misrepresentations or omissions of the science of global warming which, since 1998, is now cooling. Children can accept truth, but this book doesn't present much of it. The earth's climate is presented as static and unchanging (except for us darn humans & those flatulent bovines), contrary to acknowledging climate change as the dynamic force that it is; moving the climate of the earth between ice ages and climate optimums. (Though this change is constantly trending either warmer or cooler, it proceeds at such a snails pace to us short lived humans that we tend think of it as being stable.) The book proceeds from the assumption that all that needs to be known about global warming already is, that it is a given that humans are overwhelming an otherwise perpetually stable global climate. It's the kid version of 'the debate is over' without saying so directly but carries on with the pervasive assumption of it being so, from the first page to the last. If, as an adult, you can't be bothered to educate yourself by learning the facts of AGW first to see & understand how lacking and slanted this little tome is and don't care if you passively contribute to retard development of critical thinking of the children in your life, buy them this book and help perpetuate the mainstream 'dumbing down' of the next generation. But, if you want your child to be at the head of the class in their understanding of the science in climate change (and your own as well), you might try "The Sky is Not Falling" as a more balanced presentation of global warming.

I love Not a Box as do my students. This is a perfect picture book. Simple and engaging, with simple line drawings that quickly draw the reader in. The children laugh and giggle as they can certainly relate to the wonderful imagination of the main character. This book is definitely a must-have for any collection. Highly recommended.

I have fond memories of playing Candyland when I was young. Many hours with my parents and older sister, but it had been a long time since I played it. I picked this up to play with my daughter and it is just as I remembered it, at least the fun part. Some of the details are a bit hazy so I do not recall the board exactly, and the new board did not really bother me much because I look at it more for the fun. We are enjoying it together and though it is basic in terms of strategy and the fact it is chance based, it does not detract from the enjoyment and sometimes one or the other wins. It shows the basic concept of taking turns, some skills on colors/matching and overall a good first step game.

This game was something I was anxious for my little cousin to experience since I had such fond memories of playing it as a child. When it was purchased however I was extremely shocked and disappointed by the changes. The gingerbread men had wider bottoms that overlap the board pieces, and the graphics were horrible. My favorite characters like Jolly and Grandma Nut were completely unrecognizable, and Plumpy was nowhere to be found. Plus there was a beaver, where'd he come from? My cousin enjoyed the game but I felt bummed. The nostalgia is just not there with this version. Why are they ruining all the great games with their ugly changes? Maybe it's just me and I focus too much on the looks of things, but the new version just didn't cut it for me. I suggest buying the retro version from Wal-Mart or an old game board online. My cousin enjoys the older version so much that we rarely use the newer designed board.

My kid and I both love this show. He's almost 2, I'm 38. If that doesn't say enough I'll add that it is entertaining and educational, and we'd both sit and watch it all day if we could. However, at the time of this review, I'm seeing a price between 20 and 30 dollars for two episodes on one disc. I can't even believe my eyes. I would consider this for about half that price and it would be a "maybe." Again great show, can't say enough about it, I just wish it were a good deal as well.

I bought this for my 3 1/2 yr old after Christmas seemed to explode at our house. It didn't take that long for me to put together and it is very sturdy. The containers that come with it are not thin and flimsy like some. The lids stay on very well. Too well in my son's eyes, so he needs help with them. That is ok with me since it helps to contol the amount of toys he is getting out. I would buy this again and I wish I would have gotten it sooner.

Summer is almost over and school will be starting soon in most places around the United States. Due to the current changes in our economic structure here in the U.S., many of us have had to relocate due to company transfers or loss of a job.

Changes are very hard on children when they have to leave their old school and friends. Trying to fit into a new circle of friends can be heart breaking for many children and in some cases lead to friendships that you do not desire your child to make.

What can a parent do to make the transition easier? As a parent our first impulse is to make things better as fast as we can. Mostly for our own peace of mind, but that solves very little. Children face back to school problems frequently and it is not all bad. Facing a problem and solving it is good for a child's self esteem, but many times it is a parent's job to lead the child in the right direction.

Helping your child adjust to a new school and new friendships takes more than a parent saying "it will just take some time, be patient." Sometimes during that "patient" mode the wrong kind of friends can appear and then what was a molehill becomes a giant mountain.

In our grownup world we sometimes forget the importance of "having someone to sit with at lunch," or who will I play with at recess, even finding a buddy to work with on a school project can be devastating to a new kid on the block.

This is where a little role playing on the part of a parent comes in handy. The most important thing a parent can do is to make the child understand that it is up to the child to be friendly first. Help the child make a list of things that friendly people do, like smiling, a cheerful attitude, give compliments, join in games with enthusiasm, lose gracefully and to try speaking first.

Each child is basically insecure, the new child is afraid "they won't like me" and the old child "thinks the new one is stuck up because they don't speak." Both are afraid to take the first steps and so you, as a parent, have to help your child take the first step. A little coaching in how to start a conversation can make all the difference in how your child begins a new school year.

Instill in your child the thought that a smile can go a long way in helping other children feel at ease around a newcomer. Make certain your child participates in after school activities, this not only helps a child make friends with classmates, but can lead to many friendships outside the classroom.

What do you do when your child cries, "my teacher hates me?"

Generally it is not a true statement and most parents should just listen and try talking it out with the child to see what makes him/her think so. Young children have a tendency to over react to change. A new teacher has new ways of teaching, the possibility that last year's teacher was a more gentle teacher and gave out a lot of stickers and smiley faces may make a child think all teachers are like that.

Advancing grades mean harder work and the possibility that the child is having problems with the work and is getting a lower grade than before may make him/her think the teacher hates them.

If a child is acting up in class, they may also confuse discipline as a sign of dislike. If your child's grades seem low or if discipline seems to be the problem, I strongly advise the parent(s) to make an appointment to see the teacher and discuss the problem.

The important thing here is to not accuse the teacher of being unfair to your child, but to ask her to explain what it is she thinks the situation is.

Ask questions as to "what can I do to help my child do better in your class?" "My child seems very unhappy this school year, have you noticed anything going on in class that is adding to his/her unhappiness?" By asking questions you are not putting the teacher on the defensive and he/she maybe far more comfortable in talking to you.

Develop a bond with the teacher if your child is having problems, a teacher spends at least 5 to 7 hours a day with a child and has much insight as to what is going on. If you are amenable to working with the teacher much, can be accomplished.

The work is too hard for me or I have too much homework. What can a parent do?

If your child is having problems coping with his/her schoolwork on a continual basis, this is the time to contact the teacher and have a conference.

The teacher may suggest that the child spend a little more time with her by coming in early or staying a little late so that help maybe extended. A teacher may suggest a student tutor help the child or suggest ways that you at home may help your child boost its understanding or improve its study skills.

It maybe that your child is really doing well, possibly better in some subjects and not so well in others. It is not unusual for children to excel in several subjects and feel like they are failing in others. Everyone has their points of interest and not everyone can be perfect in all things. It is your job as a parent to explain to your child that perseverance pays and that they should do well in the subjects they like and understand and work as hard as they can to understand and do well in subjects they find difficult.

I can remember studying geometry and algebra and hating every single minute of each class and crying over the homework. It was like studying Greek to me, but I was persistent in my efforts and did get through the classes.

Point out how you struggled in some subjects at school; praise your child for every little accomplishment he/she makes in an effort to succeed in the subject.

Teach the child to say to himself when he is frustrated that "he can ask for help and get it or many really smart kids struggle with some subjects and get it, so can I can, too."

We were not all created to be Rhodes Scholars and though it is important to do well in school a B or C is not the end of the world for any of us.

I can't do all this homework.

In the course of a school year, a parent hears this argument a zillion times and what is the answer? Sometimes it really is too much homework , but most of the time, it is the child that feels overwhelmed because he/she is disorganized.

It is said that a child should have about 10 minutes of homework per grade level, a second grader about 20 minutes, a fourth grade student 40 minutes and so on.

A child should have a suitable place to work with no distractions around to help their mind wander. Help your child organize their work and allow them a few minutes break between subjects. Sometimes it is easier to get them to do the easy stuff first and then concentrate on what they consider the hard stuff.

If you have tried your best to help your child organize itself and the problem still persists, contact the teacher to see if both of you can come up with a viable solution to the problem. Many times a teacher will allow an overwhelmed child a little more leeway and the problem will be solved.

Some children are just overwhelmed and then they get totally frustrated and begin to hate school. Once that passion begins to develop, it takes serious effort to change it. That is why you as a parent, should do all that you can to help your child cope with all real and imagined difficulties they face in school.

Sometimes it is hard to remember that they are "little people" and that their minds do not work or rationalize like an adult mind and they need help and understanding.

Help and understanding does not mean giving in to each and every demand, but teaching organization, persistence, patience, and proper attitude.

No one ever promised us a rose garden and we know when life gives us lemons, we need to make lemonade. So to help our children as they are growing up, we need to nurture, stroke and push them all at the same time, but with love and understanding, as that is our main job as parents

If youve got young children in the house, then youre probably involved in the never ending battle against toys, projects and artwork that seem to take over every room. While no one expects infants and toddlers to pick up after themselves, young children can begin learning the basics of organization with a little help from their parents.

By implementing some of the following strategies you can be well on your way to a more organized, cooperative, and harmonious home life.

Start with the most practical room arrangement. Whether its the bedroom, the playroom, or somewhere else, decide which activities will take place there and provide the furniture and accessories to meet the needs.

If your child has been in preschool or attends after school care, you may have noticed that classrooms are often divided into activity centers. Theres usually a quiet area for reading and nap time, an area with tables for eating, writing, arts and crafts, and puzzle work, and a special corner for imaginative play where kids can act out their fantasies, try out different roles, and practice social skills.

Create activity zones at home. If your children have communal play areas in addition to their private space or bedroom, focus different activities in each. For older children whose toys often come with lots of very small parts its especially important to keep these potentially dangerous objects away from small children.

Having separate play areas also gives your children the opportunity to entertain themselves, enjoy quiet time alone, or choose to interact with family members depending on their mood. It also signals that everything doesnt have to be shared.

Since the bedroom is a place of rest and tends to be quiet, some logical activities to station there might include reading, doing homework, drawing, or writing. Be sure to provide a desk, chair and a lamp for these tasks. You may also toss a soft beanbag chair into a cozy nook for reading or solitary play.

No matter which activities you choose for your available play areas, be sure to provide convenient, ample, and practical storage. Unless the toys and games have a place to rest when theyre not in use, you will never achieve the organized room you hope for.

If your children play primarily in a room thats seen by visitors to the house, you may want your storage containers to look more like furniture, so that when things are put away, no one will know the room doubles as a playroom. Try storing toy bins and baskets behind cabinet doors, place a chest in front of a couch for storing larger items, or provide nesting tables that can be pulled out during the day to provide additional surface area for games and other activities.

You might even hang a fabric curtain or place a folding screen in front of an area that looks messy, even when everything is in its proper place.

Some families prefer to set guidelines for the level of messiness they can live with. To keep peace among the family members and help calm the nerves of the neatniks in your household, you may designate certain areas as must clean up by the end of the day, while others dont require such stringent standards.

Even as adults, we often find ourselves in the middle of a project that requires several days to complete. If we had to set up and take everything apart on a daily basis it would waste a lot of time and take some fun out of the project.

When setting up activity zones, keep in mind the amount of noise an activity generates so you dont promote the conflict that could occur when the TV is next to the reading area.

If you have a toddler and an older child playing in the same room, make sure the little one cant reach the toys of the older one.

Keep toy containers small and lightweight enough for easy access. Your children will feel independent and gain a sense of accomplishment knowing they can get what they need without your help.

To make cleanup easier, label toy containers for the school-age readers in the household. For younger siblings go online or cut pictures from toy catalogs that represent the type of toy that belongs in each container. Then, attach the picture to the bottom or the front as a reminder of what belongs there.

When its time to clean up show your child what you want them to do. In the beginning, the results may not be perfect, but if you remain positive your child will be eager to please you again the next time. All human beings want approval so praise the results of a job well done.

Try making it a fun experience by playing music or offering a reward for the fewest complaints or the quickest completion. About 15 minutes before playtime is over prepare your child by telling them theyll be moving to a different activity soon. Set a timer so that youre not the bad guy when the time comes.

We have Right Brain and Left Brain. My triplets, who have very different personalities, liked Baby Einstein better when they were still in bouncers and crawling around. Now that they are toddlers at 22 mos, they've been enjoying Brainy Baby better. They still like Baby Einstein but since that only has music they just get the enjoyment of the pictures and music and such and the visual fun. With Brainy Baby, they are now learning because the narrator will say what's on the screen instead of just seeing it, so they are learning more now and understanding. For us, Baby Einstein is better for the infants, where Brainy Baby is better for the toddlers ages 1+ to start. But we love it! I didn't know they made more but now that I know I'm going to start buying the others! They love them!

Turning ten years old is a special time because it is when children finally reach another milestone in their life, no longer in the single digits. Why not make their special birthday even more special and rememberable with a gift they would love. Around this age children may develop specific interests in certain things. Encouraging learning through toys and games will jump start a kids interest in other subjects possibly.

There are so many toys and options available it might be difficult choosing something a 10 year old would enjoy. Though, drawing and coloring kits can suit any aged individual but there are difference in quality and prices ranges when it comes to art supplies. One wouldn't recommend high quality art supplies for younger children.

Word games are also another way to learn and memorize vocabulary. Different types of games are a good way to introduce aspects of basic education such as multiple tables, grammar, and memorization (State capitals for example). Games can make learning more interesting and appealing to young kids. When purchasing toys for girls, one can never go wrong with dolls and doll houses.
